West End is a predominantly residential neighborhood adjacent to downtown Winston-Salem. As one of the first streetcar suburbs in North Carolina, the neighborhood was effectively developed at the turn of the century and boasts examples of buildings in the Queen Anne, Neo-Classical Revival, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman styles.
The typical West End street is lined with granite curbs and has one or two narrow grassy strips, often planted with trees, dividing it from the sidewalks. Interestingly, the original brick sidewalks still remain along two stretches of N. Spring Street. As part of the plan for creating a picturesque landscape, West End is home to several parks and green spaces, such as Grace Court, Hanes Park, a memorial garden held by the St. Paul Church as well as some wooded areas scattered about.
While most of West End consists of residential houses, commercial buildings and apartments are present, along with a local YMCA. Brunson Elementary school is located in West End in close proximity to the YMCA. According to Realtor.com, the median list price of homes in West End was $405K as of May 2021, trending up 15.7% year-over-year.
