Winston-Salem Neighborhood Spotlight – Waughtown

Waughtown is a Winston-Salem neighborhood located southeast of downtown right off I-40 and John Gold Memorial Expy, stretching across roughly eighteen blocks. The vast majority of the buildings in the Waughtown-Belview Historic District are single-family homes, many of which date back from 1890 through 1915. The oldest property remaining from the pre-civil war period in the district was built in about 1825 at 1620 Waughtown Street.

Though a few more early nineteenth century buildings exist, more than two thirds of homes were built after 1915. As development spanned multiple decades, the neighborhood features a range of architectural styles from Greek Revival and Colonial Revival to Queen Anne to Bungalow/American Craftsman. While the Waughtown-Belview District is predominantly residential, some shopping and dining options as well as grocery stores can be found in the area, mostly along or in close proximity to Waughtown St.

Some points of interest include the Waughtown cemetery as well as three parks (Forest Park, Belview Park and Sprague Street Park). According to Realtor.com, the median list price of homes in the area was $90K as of June 2021, while the median sold price stood at $77K.

Waughtown-Belview was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
